CASTING OUT FIVES

In the heart of Paris’s 5th district, a new hotel plays the stationary journey card for a varied clientele.

Sleeping in a hotel is sometimes pleasant, sometimes not-so-pleasant, and usually a little sterile. We often wish we could bring our own personal touch to the experience and transform the ambiance to suit our individuality. And that is now possible at the Five Hotel, a new arrival right in the middle of Paris’s Latin Quarter. The name is a nod to the number of the district, but the Five also devotes itself to pleasing the five senses with a well polished design and refined atmosphere. Decidedly modern, it has opted to combine rather frank colors (oranges, vivid reds, shining blacks), furniture with a ‘pop’ twist, unexpected fabrics, materials and textures, and an emphasis on geometric patterns ranging from stripes and polka dots to prints. All 24 rooms – each very markedly different one from the next – have been conceived by interior designers Marie-Paule Clout and Vincent Bastie (to whom we owe the Murano, amongst others). The bedroom with suspended bed seemingly afloat in the air is hard to resist. Depending on the whim of the moment, you can choose the fragrant character of the room: there are five relaxing or invigorating propositions, courtesy of Diptyque. In the bathroom, it is the lighting that is used to create new illusions. Thanks to fiber optics embedded between the tiles, you can take your ablutions under a shower of stars. A union between playful and sophisticated sums it up. NATHALIE FRASER
