THE FIVE HOTEL

Nestled in a little street of Paris’s 5th district, the Five Hotel has just enjoyed a high-profile opening. These beautiful premises were ‘authored’ by designer Vincent Bastie, hotel renovations pro who has, most notably, the Murano on his CV, and subscribe to the new wave of Parisian hotels with minimalist décor, reasonable prices (from €150) and highly conceptual designs. If the Amour hotel is the top of the pile in terms of romantic atmospheres, then the Five leads the way for the mysterious and alluring, worthy of a Kubrick movie. Certainly one cannot escape the impression when riding the elevator upholstered in cushioned red leather. ‘I produced a piece focused around color to personalize the different spaces of the premises,’ Vincent Bastie explains. And so we find the contemporary designs of the 24 rooms revolving around nine different ‘feels’. You can choose the color of your room to suit your taste and the mood of moment: from white, black and turquoise to pistachio, gold, mauve, red, orange and chestnut. Simply by experimenting with textures, colors, fabrics and lighting, the designer and his associate interior decorator, Marie-Paule Clout, have succeeded in lending each room a distinct character. To cap it, the rooms are adorned with original signed works by Isabelle Emmerique. An artist specializing in the art of lacquer, she has created a unique mural sculpture for each room. A singular artistic touch perfectly harmonized with the hotel’s ubiquitous fiber optic light sources. ‘By embedding this lighting in bathroom tiles and room ceilings, we wanted to create a more magical lighting concept: soft and scintillating...,’Vincent Bastie concludes. Gems of light transform the ceilings and showers into Milky Ways… enough to make you dream? C.R.
